The Zodiac
When we refer to our ‘Zodiac Sign’ we are talking about our Sun sign. Our Sun sign will be determined by the zodiac constellation which was directly behind the sun from the earths perspective on the date of our birth.

It is worth noting that we are not the sum of a mere Sun sign. You are not one in twelve as the common myth would blindly assume. Each planet will represent a facet of our personality and of our psyche. The Sun represents our souls fundamental expression.

Horoscopes

Let’s not misunderstand one another. Horoscopes casting is an ancient art. I say Art because all Astrologers are like artists, in that when we look at the celestial bodies moving through our unimaginable heavens; we all paint a different picture based on our own unique interpretation.

That is not to say that we do not follow a code of practise that is essentially the same. But such is the wealth of Astrological input in interpretation, that to cast a Horoscopes for the masses is nothing short of an impossible task! One that has far reaching ramifications.

For one - it gives the layman the misconception that Astrology is all about being one in twelve. Due to the nature of casting Horoscopes for the masses, you can be sure they are kept general. They have to be, so again, this gives people the rather false impression that Astrology is not very specific.

Some people would rightly categorise Astrologers with false mystics who clutch at metaphorical straws in front of a weary audience and in trying to predict their futures use obscure language, general statements and vague guesses. Indeed - Horoscopes have a lot to answer for.

You should hear the debates amongst professional Astrologers! We are aware of their pitfalls. And yet we still write them. Why? I can’t speak for anyone else, but i can speak for myself. I write them for three reasons.

The first is that I enjoy it as a creative outlet which keeps me up to date with the heavenly movements, in writing horoscopes I am forced to see where the heavenly bodies are so I can demise a rough outline for the energies floating around and how they are effecting not just myself but those around me. From this I can also see how the movements in the heavens are impacting the world at large.

The second reasons is because without horoscopes in the media, the general public would not be aware that our astrological expertise exists and is available to them; so yes, it’s  publicity, not just for myself as a practising Astrologer but also for Astrology too.

The last reason (that is by no means least) is that, on a very general level, they are to some extent going to be true. I like the fact that I can perhaps bring comfort to those in need of it and perhaps inspire people who are seeking some guidance.

Now, to address this “I’m not one in twelve” idea that is commonly stated. You are absolutely right.  You are not one in twelve! It would be insane to imagine that there were only twelve possible outcomes for the millions of people living vastly different lives! Astrologers know this. The truth is that the Art of Horoscope writing is fundamentally very different from what Astrology actually is.

So what is Astrology? Astrology is a very ancient and complex system for divination. After hundred of years of mapping the movements in our heavens and observing the correlation between these movements and events on earth, Astrology was born and (as time has passed and more observations have been made) added to.

Essentially it is a man made Art of prediction based on the idea that everything that is above happens in cycles (just as the seasons on earth do to because of our earths rotation)  so too then it follows that our lives may also run in cycles and essentially are predictable to a certain degree. That degree is a natural source of contention as perhaps some Astrologers do take these predictions too far and abolish the concept of free will over a fatalistic mentality. But that’s another debate! Either way, this is non the less the basic premise: As Above: So Below.

It is interesting to note than man created the symbology and mythology, through his own observation and understanding of his human experience here on earth. He then projected those archetypal facets of our psyche out into the Heavenly bodies. So Astrology although mystical in it’s nature (as it requires a certain belief that these movements are some how connected) Astrology is also a very humanistic reflection of our very own psyches - a kind of early psychology.

Astrology can be used in a variety of ways. Predicting world events and global phenomenon's. For example the birth of radical new technology surfaced at the discovery of Uranus which has radically changed the way we communicate on a global scale. These technologies which we use everyday were once absent from the human experience on earth. Uranus thus is the ruler of such radical reform.

The type of Astrology which has most fascinated me till this point is that of Personal Astrology. Where we can dive into a persons psyche and see how they tick on many different levels. To find this out we must first cast a chart drawing. Essentially it is a map of the heavens at the exact time and place of your birth. With the subject or person at the centre.

Each Planet including the Sun and Moon will all represent a different facet of your psyche. For example, the Sun (which is your Star Sign) will represent your souls fundamental expression. The Moon; your emotional nature. Mercury; the way you think and communicate etc.. The Zodiac constellation which was the back drop of those planets will represent the way in which those aspects of you are expressed. So a Mercury in Virgo individual will think very differently to a Mercury in Sagittarius person. You are not just a sun sign but much more.

Then, as if this wasn’t complicated enough, it gets deeper and more precise still. As these planets will also be making a relationship to each other, this is dependant on the mathematical angles at that exact time. We call these Aspects. So from looking at the Aspects we can derive how parts of your psyche relate to other parts. It is interesting to note that all the Planets are moving at varying speeds. Some Planets spend up to fourteen years in a sign, thus having an effect on, or reflecting whole generations.

Now, the time of your birth is important too as within every twenty four hours as the earth rotates full cycle so too does the zodiac sign on the east of the horizon change every couple of hours or so. Depending on which sign was on the East of the horizon will determine where all the planets will fall into your chart. Each chart is divided into twelve parts we call the Houses, they represent areas of your life that these energies are most attuned or focused. Thus making every chart vastly unique from the next.

Describing the basics of Astrology is really a class room task with a good few hours every week and a few diagrams thrown in for good measure. I’ve given you a snippet off the top of my head to give you some idea of what and how it is done. Believe me when I say there is more - there’s always more.

I hope that this gives you, the questioning and inquisitive mind, a concrete understanding that there is more to Astrology and casting Horoscopes than meets the eye. If you want to find out more, then I suggest you take a course, do some reading and study your own chart and that of your friends. Then draw your own intelligent conclusions.
